After many long hours, the majority of the exterior paint is off, up to 4mm in places, it took many many coats of paint remover. Besides quite a few small shallow dings, there are two epic ones! The left side rear fender has been bashed hard, had 10mm of filler over quite a large area, also the front drivers door looks like it was smashed into a light pole or something, it requires some serious work. Besides that, for a almost 15 year old car there is no rust besides a tiny bit of surface marking around where the window was bonded in, not bad for a car that spent near all its life at the coast. The rear parcel shelf was cut to bits to fit 6X9’s, I timed the whole center out and left the front and rear chassis supports in place. Remaining sections will need some fabrication and spot welding. Was a seriously hot day today, battled a bit,
First thing that happened was fender flaring in the front, to do this the stock front brakes were removed (for good) Rolled the fenders a healthy 20mm, after that the fenders were removed and made ready for paint stripping, The Glass all round (besides door glass) was removed, not a fun task in 30+deg heat. The roof was also relieved of its carbon fiber skin. The engine and gearbox oil were drained, the fun stuff starts soon. Some pics: Did some parts removal today, Old motor is now ready to come out and be shipped off to its new home. A small idea for colors, Mercedes Plat silver for the body and Audi RS6 gunmetal for the interior and engine bay.
Seats, center consol and carpet taken out. Another 11kg's of insulation removed. Dash and door panels removed. Heater box out and last of the insulation and sound deadener is out. ENGINE CHOICE
So after much long hard thought, and trust me is was a long consideration, I have decided to stay SR20 for a few reasons… 1. Balance and weight. 2. Power delivery 3. Sound And probably more than that, I want to make a point with this car, so few cars are purpose built using SR20’s, ya you guys see what Cmonster, Mypro, Patrol etc do on the street, but street cars will never be competitive in a straight line as a drag car or in a corner as a race car, so thus, I am going to stick with SR20, nothing serious (budget budget budget) in fact a stock motor just with some pistons and ras’s for now till the car is all setup. 7th day: 2kgs of sealer - was a long one, removal of the seam sealer so I can seam weld the body (going to be a full body seam weld), this stuff does not like heat, with any heat it just makes it worse to get off, so I did it cold with a rounded screwdriver to not scratch the metal. Starting off... A few hours later. Around the back seat area. In the engine bay (rest will come off when engine is out).
4kg's removed off the boot, same as the bonnet, just layers and layers of paint, and some rust from where they filled the wholes from the OE spoiler. Before... During... After...
Started to remove the carbon skin. Rear trim all stripped out getting ready to remove sound insulation. Update on the days work: 13.7kg's removed between the bonnet and rear deadening, 9 layers of paint under that carbon. Cross bracing cut out. Carbon fully removed. Bare metal. Half out sound deadener. Cleaned up.
Remaining sound deadener is removed - what took someone 5 minutes to put in has taken 15 hours to remove. TOTAL: 22 hours labour
- Removed 11kg's of aftermarket wiring... All of which wasn’t being used. - Removed meth injection system. - Removed boost controller. - Removed all gauges and dash mounted gauge pod. TOTAL: 15 hours labour
Full day of trying to remove very very sticky roof water sealer used as sound deadener. 4kg Later TOTAL: 8 hours labour
